More Details on Our Top Picks
Soft-Sided Pet Carrier for Cats and Dogs, Collapsible and Travel-Friendly
This soft-sided carrier stands out for its lightweight build and fold-flat design, making it ideal for travelers who prioritize portability and space-saving. Unlike bulkier options like the GAPZER Cat Carrier, this model is easier to carry and store, but its limited pet weight capacity of 16 lbs may exclude larger animals. The breathable mesh and washable interior improve pet comfort and cleanliness, yet the small size restricts usage to smaller pets. Its adjustable straps and safety belt compatibility enhance security during transit, though cleaning the interior may require removing the mat. Overall, this carrier suits frequent travelers needing a simple, airline-approved solution for small pets, with the tradeoff of limited capacity.Pros:- Lightweight and easy to carry
- Breathable mesh for good air circulation
- Folds flat for convenient storage
- Airline approved and safe for travel
Cons:- Suitable only for pets up to 16 lbs
- May not accommodate larger pets comfortably
- Cleaning may require removing the interior mat
Best for: Pet owners seeking a lightweight, foldable carrier for small pets up to 16 lbs, especially for frequent air travel or short trips.
Not ideal for: Owners of larger pets or those requiring a more durable, rigid carrier for long-term or rugged use.
- Dimensions:17 inch x 11 inch x 11 inch
- Weight:2.2 lbs
- Maximum Pet Weight:16 lbs
- Material:Tear-resistant fabric
- Features:Breathable mesh, removable washable mat, collapsible design, adjustable shoulder strap, safety belt compatible
Our verdict“This pick is best for small pet owners prioritizing portability and space-saving design for airline travel.”
Airline Approved Pet Carrier, Large Soft Sided Travel TSA Carrier with Expandable Sides, Removable Fleece Pad, and Pockets for Cats, Dogs, and Small Animals
Compared with the smaller Soft-Sided Pet Carrier for Cats and Dogs, this larger model offers more space and expandable sides, making it suitable for pets up to 20 lbs who need a bit more room to move. Its multiple access points and organizational pockets enhance convenience, but the expanded size—up to 43.5 inches—may be bulky for some travelers, especially on crowded flights. The removable fleece pad and ventilated design improve pet comfort, yet its size limits compatibility with some airline under-seat requirements. This carrier makes the most sense for pet owners who travel frequently with slightly larger pets and want extra space, accepting the tradeoff of increased bulk.Pros:- Expandable sides provide extra room
- Removable fleece pad simplifies cleaning
- Multiple access points and pockets for organization
- Ventilated for good airflow
Cons:- Bulky when fully expanded, less portable
- Size may not fit all airline under-seat dimensions
- Limited to pets up to 20 lbs
Best for: Owners of small to medium pets up to 20 lbs who need extra space and organization on longer trips.
Not ideal for: Travelers with very small carriers or those with limited storage space, due to its larger, expandable design.
- Dimensions:19.5″L x 12″W x 12″H (43.5″ expanded)
- Max Load:20 lbs
- Fits Pets Up To:19″L x 11″H x 11″H
- Material:Soft-sided, steel frame
- Features:Expandable sides, removable fleece pad, multiple pockets, ventilated openings
Our verdict“Ideal for pet owners needing extra space and organization for small to medium pets during travel, with the tradeoff of increased bulk.”
Ruff Life 101 Airline Approved Expandable Pet Carrier on Wheels – Grey
This carrier excels for pet owners who want the combination of expandability and mobility, thanks to its wheels and retractable handle. Unlike the soft-sided carriers without wheels, such as the Amazon Basics Mesh Carrier, this model offers a more stress-free way to transport pets through airports and busy environments. Its expandable sides provide additional space, and the breathable mesh ensures good airflow. However, it lacks specified weight capacity details, which could be a concern for heavier pets, and its durability over long-term use remains unclear. This option works well for those valuing ease of movement and extra room, but may fall short for owners of larger or heavier animals.Pros:- Expandable sides for extra pet space
- Wheels and retractable handle for portability
- Breathable mesh design for comfort
- Designed to meet airline cabin size restrictions
Cons:- No specific weight capacity listed
- Potential size restrictions depending on airline rules
- Limited info on long-term durability
Best for: Pet owners who prioritize mobility and extra space for medium-sized pets during travel, especially in airports or on busy routes.
Not ideal for: Owners with very small pets or those seeking a purely lightweight, non-wheeled carrier for short trips only.
- Dimensions:18 inches (L) x 11 inches (W) x 11 inches (H)
- Material:Grade nylon, faux fleece
- Expandable Sides:Yes
- Wheels:Yes, 360-degree rotating and removable
- Handle:Retractable, heavy-duty
Our verdict“Best suited for travelers needing a mobile, expandable carrier that combines convenience with extra space, accepting some ambiguity in durability and weight capacity.”
Amazon Basics Airline Approved Soft-Sided Mesh Pet Travel Carrier with Shoulder Strap, Removable Washable Fleece Pad, Top Opening, Ventilation for Dog, Cat, up to 22 pounds, 19.7Lx12Wx12H in., Black
The Amazon Basics carrier offers a balanced mix of comfort and convenience, with mesh ventilation and multiple access points, making it suitable for pets up to 22 pounds. Compared to the Soft-Sided Pet Carrier, its larger size and additional openings simplify loading and unloading, but it may be less durable over frequent use, especially with the fabric and mesh. The removable fleece pad aids in cleaning, yet owners must measure carefully to ensure their pet fits comfortably within its dimensions. This carrier makes the most sense for pet owners who want a straightforward, airline-compatible option that emphasizes pet comfort and user-friendly features, with some compromise on durability.Pros:- Excellent mesh ventilation for airflow
- Removable washable fleece pad simplifies cleaning
- Conforms to most airline under-seat dimensions
- Multiple access points for easy pet loading
Cons:- Limited to pets up to 22 lbs
- May be less durable with frequent use
- Requires careful measurement for proper fit
Best for: Owners of small to medium pets up to 22 lbs seeking an easy-to-use, well-ventilated carrier for frequent travel.
Not ideal for: Travelers with very small or very large pets, or those needing a highly durable carrier for rugged use.
- Dimensions:19.7L x 12W x 12H inches
- Weight Capacity:Up to 22 pounds
- Material:Mesh, fabric
- Color:Black
- Features:Removable washable fleece pad, mesh ventilation, top and front openings, adjustable shoulder strap
Our verdict“A practical choice for pet owners prioritizing comfort, ventilation, and ease of access on airline trips for small to medium pets.”
GAPZER Cat Carrier 18x11x11 inches, Airline Approved Soft Pet Travel Kennel
This carrier is designed for medium-sized cats and small dogs up to 25 lbs, offering a spacious and secure environment. Its self-locking zippers and durable mesh make it more escape-resistant than some softer, less rigid options like the Amazon Basics Carrier. While its size—18x11x11 inches—fits many airline under-seat requirements, it may be too large for very small pets or those needing a more lightweight carrier. The adjustable, collapsible design adds convenience for storage. This model is ideal for pet owners who want a balance of security and comfort, though its rigid frame and size might limit flexibility in tight spaces or for very small animals.Pros:- Spacious and comfortable for medium pets
- Secure, escape-resistant design with self-locking zippers
- Good ventilation with mesh sides
- Convertible for storage and car travel
Cons:- May be too large for very small pets
- Rigid frame could be less flexible in tight spaces
- Limited color options
Best for: Pet owners with medium-sized cats or small dogs up to 25 lbs seeking a secure, escape-proof carrier for air travel.
Not ideal for: Owners of very small pets or those needing a lightweight, highly flexible carrier for quick trips or minimal storage.
- Dimensions:18x11x11 inches
- Material:600D oxford fabric, durable mesh
- Weight Capacity:Pets up to 25 lbs
- Includes:Adjustable shoulder strap, fleece pad, seatbelt sleeve
- Approved For:United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta
Our verdict“Best for pet owners prioritizing security and comfort for medium pets during airline travel, with some tradeoffs in flexibility and size for small animals.”
Lekereise Top-Expandable Pet Carrier 18x13x9.5 Inch Southwest Airline Approved Soft Sided Underseat for Small Cats and Dogs
This carrier stands out for its thoughtful expandable top, which offers extra space for small pets during flights, making it a strong choice for travelers who prioritize comfort in tight spaces. Compared to the Sherpa Delta, which has a more rigid structure, the Lekereise’s soft-sided design and expandable feature cater to pets that need a bit more room without sacrificing portability. However, its size limits it to pets up to 15 lbs, and checking airline compatibility is essential. The sturdy, scratch-resistant fabric enhances durability, while breathable mesh sides improve ventilation. The tradeoff is that larger or heavier pets will find this carrier unsuitable, and it might not fit under all airline seats.
Pros:- Fits under seat for convenient travel on specific airlines
- Expandable top offers extra space for pets to move
- Breathable mesh sides for improved ventilation
- Sturdy, scratch-resistant fabric ensures durability
Cons:- Limited to pets up to 15 lbs, restricting larger small pets
- Requires checking airline compatibility before travel
- Size may be too small for some pets’ comfort
Best for: Small pet owners who need an expandable, underseat carrier compatible with Southwest and Frontier Airlines.
Not ideal for: Pet owners with larger animals or those seeking a carrier for pets over 15 lbs, as this model’s weight limit is restrictive.
- Dimensions:18 x 13 x 9.5 inches
- Max Pet Weight:15 lbs
- Material:Waterproof, scratch-resistant fabric
- Breathability:Mesh on three sides
- Expandable:Yes
- Compatibility:Southwest and Frontier Airlines
Our verdict“This carrier is ideal for small, lightweight pets needing extra room in airline-approved underseat carriers on select airlines.”
GAPZER Pet Carrier for Large Cats up to 20 lbs, Soft-Sided with Privacy Protection
This carrier excels for owners of slightly larger cats who value privacy and a collapsible, lightweight design. Its spacious dimensions of 18.1″L x 11.8″W x 11.8″H” provide more room than smaller options like the Henkelion, making it suitable for cats up to 20 lbs. The mesh panels promote excellent airflow, and the privacy blinds allow for a calming environment, a feature not found in the Henkelion’s simpler design. However, the size limits its use for bigger pets, and mesh durability may diminish over time. The collapsible feature makes storage easy, but pet owners should be mindful that the extra space can be less secure for very active pets. This makes it ideal for calm, medium-sized cats needing privacy and comfort.
Pros:- Breathable mesh for good airflow
- Collapsible and lightweight for easy storage
- Removable, washable liner for convenience
- Includes privacy blinds for calming environment
Cons:- Limited to pets up to 20 lbs, unsuitable for bigger animals
- Mesh panels may wear over time
- Less secure for very active or escape-prone pets
Best for: Cat owners looking for a combination of airflow, privacy, and portability for pets up to 20 lbs.
Not ideal for: Owners of larger or highly energetic pets who might find the mesh panels less durable or need more space.
- Dimensions:18.1″L x 11.8″W x 11.8″H
- Max Load:20 lbs
- Material:Oxford fabric with faux lambskin liner
- Carrying Options:Shoulder straps and handles
- Breathability:Full mesh design
- Collapse Feature:Yes
Our verdict“This carrier suits owners of medium-sized cats who value privacy and portability in airline-approved carriers.”
Henkelion Cat and Dog Carrier, TSA Airline Approved, Soft Sided, Collapsible, Waterproof, Black
The Henkelion carrier offers a straightforward, TSA-compliant solution for small to medium pets up to 15 lbs. Its lightweight polyester fabric and waterproof design make it durable for travel, with mesh sides ensuring proper ventilation. While it is more rigid than the collapsible GAPZER, it provides a reliable structure that many pet owners appreciate for ease of handling. The size (15″ x 9″ x 9″) is ideal for small pets but may feel cramped for slightly larger animals, and the mesh panels, though ventilated, could wear over time with frequent use. Compared to the Sherpa Delta, which features a more structured frame, Henkelion’s flexibility and waterproof qualities appeal to owners needing a lightweight, durable option for short trips.
Pros:- TSA and airline approved for smooth travel
- Lightweight and durable construction
- Mesh sides for ventilation and visibility
- Waterproof fabric for added protection
Cons:- Suitable only for pets up to 15 lbs
- Size may be too small for slightly larger pets
- Mesh panels could wear or tear with frequent use
Best for: Owners of small to medium pets seeking a durable, TSA-approved carrier with waterproof features.
Not ideal for: Pet owners with larger animals or those requiring extensive space for longer trips, as this carrier is quite compact.
- Dimensions:15″ x 9″ x 9″
- Weight Limit:15 lbs
- Material:Polyester fabric
- Features:Collapsible, Waterproof, Mesh sides
- Color:Black
Our verdict“This carrier fits owners of small pets who prioritize durability, waterproofing, and airline compliance for short trips.”
Petmate Sky Kennel for Air Travel, 21in Dog Crate for Pets up to 15lbs
The Petmate Sky Kennel provides a sturdy, secure option for small pets requiring a more traditional crate. Its 21-inch size offers more interior space than soft-sided options like the Henkelion, making it suitable for pet owners who prefer a hard-sided, IATA-compliant solution. Its durable eco-friendly plastic and 360-degree ventilation ensure safety and comfort during air travel. The included travel essentials add convenience, but its bulkier profile might be less convenient for frequent trips or those seeking lightweight carriers. While it exceeds soft-sided carrier limits in rigidity, it offers a reassuring sense of security, especially for owners worried about pet safety during transit.
Pros:- Meets airline and IATA requirements for pet travel
- Includes travel essentials like stickers and pads
- Eco-friendly, made with recycled materials
- Durable, secure construction with easy-squeeze latch door
Cons:- Bulkier and heavier than soft-sided carriers
- Limited interior space for larger or more active pets
- Less convenient for quick trips due to size
Best for: Owners seeking a robust, secure crate that complies with airline and IATA standards for small pets up to 15 lbs.
Not ideal for: Travelers who prioritize lightweight, soft-sided carriers or need a carrier that fits easily under all airline seats, due to its larger size and weight.
- Interior Dimensions:18.75″ L x 13.5″ W x 14.5″ H
- Weight Capacity:Up to 15 lbs
- Material:EcoTEC Plastic
- Features:360-degree ventilation, included travel essentials
- Compliance:Airline and IATA standards
Our verdict“This crate is ideal for pet owners who prioritize security and compliance over portability for small travel pets.”
Sherpa Delta Airlines Travel Pet Carrier, Airline Approved & Guaranteed On Board – Black, Medium
The Sherpa Delta offers a familiar, reliable choice for small pets up to 16 lbs, with a spring wireframe that guarantees a good fit under most airline seats. Its TSA approval and built-in luggage handle make it convenient for frequent travelers. Compared with the Lekereise, which offers an expandable feature, Sherpa prioritizes a secure, consistent fit and ease of handling, though it lacks the extra space for longer trips. The reinforced mesh panels provide excellent ventilation and visibility, but the size limit may exclude slightly larger pets or those needing more room to move. It’s especially suited for owners who value a proven, lightweight, and secure carrier for short trips.
Pros:- Airline and TSA approved for hassle-free travel
- Secure, escape-proof with locking zippers
- Built-in luggage handle for convenience
- Ample room for pets to stretch within size limits
Cons:- Limited to pets up to 16 lbs, may exclude slightly larger animals
- Size may feel cramped for some pets
- Requires careful handling to maintain proper fit under seats
Best for: Pet owners who want a dependable, TSA-approved carrier that fits under seats for small dogs or cats up to 16 lbs.
Not ideal for: Owners of larger pets or those needing an expandable or more spacious carrier for longer trips, as size is limited.
- Color:Black
- Size:Medium
- Weight Capacity:16 pounds
- Length:16 inches
Our verdict“This carrier is perfect for owners wanting a reliable, approved option for short flights with small pets up to 16 lbs.”
Petskd Top and Side Expandable Small Pet Carrier Airline Approved, Blue
This model excels in providing extra room for small pets under 12 lbs thanks to its expandable sides, making it ideal for pets that need a bit more freedom during travel. Compared with the Sherpa Original Deluxe, it offers more expansion but sacrifices some of the plush comfort features, like a washable liner. Its mesh sides ensure excellent airflow, which is crucial for keeping pets calm and comfortable in transit. However, its size limits it to pets under 12 lbs, and the expandable feature makes it less compact when not in use. This pick makes the most sense for owners who prioritize space and ventilation above all else, especially for short airline trips with tiny pets. But if you need a carrier for slightly larger animals or multi-purpose use outside of airlines, this may not be the best fit.Pros:- Expandable sides provide extra space for pets to move and stretch
- Good ventilation with mesh on five sides ensures airflow and visibility
- Made from durable, waterproof, and scratch-resistant materials
Cons:- Suitable only for small pets under 12 lbs, limiting versatility
- Size may be restrictive for slightly larger pets or for long trips
Best for: Small pet owners seeking extra space and ventilation for airline travel
Not ideal for: Pet owners with larger pets or those needing a carrier for non-airline travel
- Unfolded Size:18″L x 11″W x 11″H
- Inner Size:15″L x 8″W x 11″H
- Pet Weight Limit:Dog under 10 lbs, Cat under 12 lbs
- Material:Waterproof, scratch-resistant polyester
- Ventilation:Mesh on 5 sides
- Expansion:Side and top expandability
Our verdict“Best suited for small pet owners prioritizing extra space and airflow during airline trips, but not for larger or multi-purpose use.”
Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier, Medium, Charcoal Gray
The Sherpa Original Deluxe stands out for its combination of comfort, security, and multiple carrying options, making it ideal for owners who want a reliable under-seat carrier for various modes of travel. Its size—17″ x 11″ x 10.5″—fits under most airplane seats and supports pets up to 16 pounds, making it a flexible choice compared to the smaller Petskd carrier. Ventilated mesh panels boost pet comfort, while the washable liner simplifies cleanup after trips. However, its weight capacity limits it to smaller pets, and the included small parts require careful handling. This carrier suits frequent travelers who need a dependable, all-purpose option but may not be ideal for larger or more active pets.Pros:- Fits under airplane seats and is airline approved
- Ventilated mesh panels promote airflow and pet comfort
- Multiple carrying options including shoulder strap and luggage strap
- Removable, washable liner for easy cleaning
Cons:- Limited to pets up to 16 pounds, restricting larger small dogs or cats
- Small parts included may require caution, especially around children
Best for: Pet owners who travel regularly and need an airline-approved carrier that adapts to different transport modes
Not ideal for: Owners with larger pets over 16 pounds or those seeking a carrier with extra padding or plush features
- Size:17″ x 11″ x 10.5″
- Weight Capacity:up to 16 pounds
- Color:Charcoal Gray
- Material:Faux lambskin liner
- Features:Mesh panels, locking zippers, multiple carrying options
- Additional:Waterproof interior base
Our verdict“Ideal for frequent travelers wanting a versatile, airline-approved carrier that combines comfort and convenience for small pets.”
EliteField Soft-Sided Pet Carrier for Cats & Small Dogs
The EliteField Soft-Sided Pet Carrier offers a blend of durability, ventilation, and foldability, making it suitable for owners who value ease of storage and flexible travel options. Its multiple mesh doors and removable fleece bed enhance pet comfort, while its lightweight, waterproof fabric is a plus for durability. Compared with Sherpa, it provides more safety features like built-in leash and seat belt loops, but it may not be as plush or refined in appearance. Size limitations mean it’s best for small pets, and airline approval depends on specific airline policies, so confirmation is advised. This carrier is well-suited for owners seeking a foldable, multi-purpose travel solution, but less so for those with larger or more active pets.Pros:- Airline-approved and suitable for multiple travel modes
- Durable, lightweight, waterproof fabric ensures longevity
- Excellent ventilation with three mesh doors
- Includes safety features and storage pockets
Cons:- Size may not fit larger small dogs or cats comfortably
- Requires airline confirmation for under-seat approval
Best for: Owners seeking a durable, foldable carrier suitable for various travel modes and small pets
Not ideal for: Pet owners with pets over 15 pounds or those requiring extra padding or luxury features
- Suitable for:Cats & Small Dogs
- Material:Lightweight, waterproof fabric with Textilene mesh
- Mesh Doors:Three
- Removable Bed:Yes
- Support Board:Yes
- Safety Features:Built-in leash, seat belt loops, suitcase sleeve
- Warranty:3 years
Our verdict“A versatile, foldable carrier ideal for owners who need portability, safety, and ventilation for small pets during travel.”
How We Picked
We evaluated each pet carrier based on airline approval standards, focusing on size, weight, and features that meet airline regulations. Durability, ease of use, and overall build quality were critical, as these impact travel comfort and longevity. Value was also a key consideration—carriers should provide a good balance of features at a reasonable price. We prioritized models with positive user reviews, consistent airline approval, and practical features like ventilation and portability, ensuring each ranked product appeals to a specific traveler segment.Factors to Consider When Choosing Airline Approved Pet Carrier
When selecting an airline approved pet carrier, several factors influence how well it will serve your travel needs. Understanding these considerations helps avoid common pitfalls, such as choosing a carrier that’s too small or lacking proper ventilation. Balancing size, weight, and features ensures compliance without sacrificing your pet’s comfort. Being clear on what matters most—whether budget, durability, or ease of access—guides a smarter purchase decision.Size and Airline Regulations
Size is the most critical factor since airlines impose strict cabin baggage dimensions. Always measure your pet and compare it to the carrier’s dimensions, leaving room for comfort. Oversized carriers risk rejection at check-in, so prioritize models that clearly meet your airline’s specifications. Remember, the carrier must also fit under the seat in front of you, making compactness essential.
Durability and Material Quality
Durability matters because travel can be unpredictable—cheaper fabrics or flimsy zippers often break under stress. Look for carriers made with sturdy, tear-resistant materials and reinforced seams. Water resistance and easy-to-clean surfaces add value, especially for longer trips or if your pet tends to be messy. Skimping here might save money upfront but can lead to issues mid-travel.
Ventilation and Comfort
Proper ventilation is vital for keeping your pet calm and comfortable during flights. Mesh panels and side openings facilitate airflow, reducing anxiety and heat buildup. Padding, like fleece liners, enhances comfort but should be removable for cleaning. A well-ventilated, cushioned carrier minimizes stress and helps your pet stay cool, which is especially important on longer flights.
Portability and Ease of Use
Features like shoulder straps, handles, and lightweight construction make a carrier easier to carry through airports. Some models include wheels or collapsible designs for convenience. Consider how you’ll handle the carrier during check-in, security, and boarding. A balance between portability and sturdiness ensures that you can manage your pet comfortably without excessive effort.
Additional Features and Value
Extras like pockets for essentials, removable fleece pads, and expandable sections add convenience but can affect weight and bulk. Think about what features truly benefit your travel style—extra storage might be handy, but not if it compromises the carrier’s compliance or portability. Prioritize models that offer practical features aligned with your travel frequency and pet size.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I ensure the carrier I choose is airline approved?
To confirm a carrier’s airline approval, check the manufacturer’s specifications for compliance with the airline’s size and weight restrictions. Many carriers specify they are TSA or airline approved, but it’s wise to double-check your specific airline’s policies as they can vary. Always measure your pet and compare it to the carrier’s dimensions, and contact your airline if in doubt before booking your flight.
Can I use a soft-sided carrier for larger pets?
Soft-sided carriers are generally best suited for small to medium pets due to space and weight limits. For larger animals, a sturdier, hard-sided crate may be necessary for safety and airline approval. However, some expandable soft carriers can accommodate larger small pets if they meet airline size restrictions and are comfortable within the dimensions, but always verify your airline’s policies.
Are expandable carriers safe for pets during flights?
Expandable carriers can be safe if designed with sturdy zippers and secure seams, providing extra comfort for your pet. They are suitable for pets that are accustomed to carriers and remain calm during travel. Be cautious, however, as excessive expansion can compromise structural integrity or violate airline size limits, so choose models with proven safety features and check airline restrictions.
What features should I prioritize if I travel frequently?
Frequent travelers benefit from carriers that are lightweight, durable, and easy to carry—look for padded handles, shoulder straps, or wheels. Expandability can also be advantageous for accommodating pets of different sizes. Additionally, features like removable washable liners and multiple pockets add convenience, making the carrier more adaptable and easier to maintain over multiple trips.
How do I prepare my pet for travel in the carrier?
Gradually acclimate your pet to the carrier before travel by encouraging them to explore and spend short periods inside with treats or toys. Ensure the carrier is comfortable, well-ventilated, and appropriately sized for your pet. Familiarity reduces stress during the flight, and a comfortable carrier can make the entire travel experience smoother for both you and your pet.
